C&B After Hours: Good Conversations, Great Chocolate, and the Power of Connection
What happens when you bring together people who care about their communities, give them a reason to connect, and add a little chocolate?
On October 8, we opened our doors for C&B After Hours: An Evening of Wine, Chocolate & Connection, welcoming colleagues, educators, mental health professionals, community partners, and neighbours into our clinic for an evening that was about much more than getting together for a drink.
We wanted to create an opportunity for people from different backgrounds and specialties to meet, exchange ideas, share what they're working on, and discover where their worlds might overlap.
And judging by the conversations happening throughout the evening, there was plenty to talk about.
Bringing People Together, Beyond the Screen
We spend so much of our professional lives communicating through emails, referrals, virtual meetings, and LinkedIn that it's easy to forget the value of simply being in a room together.
At C&B, collaboration is central to how we work. We regularly connect with schools, healthcare providers, community organizations, and other professionals to help individuals and families access the support they need.
We also recognize that no single professional or organization has all the answers.
We're only as strong as our networks, and the people we support benefit when those networks are connected.
That belief was a big part of why we hosted C&B After Hours.
We weren't interested in creating another formal networking event where everyone exchanges business cards and goes home. We wanted people to enjoy themselves, have meaningful conversations, and perhaps meet someone who could help move an idea, project, or shared goal forward.
Sometimes the most valuable outcome of an event isn't what happens that evening. It's what happens afterwards because two people happened to meet.
Making Connections That Go Somewhere
One of our favourite elements of the evening was our Connection Wall, an interactive space designed to turn conversations into opportunities.
Guests were invited to share two things: "I need..." and "I know..."
The idea was simple. Someone in the room might have the knowledge, resource, introduction, or experience another person was looking for.
Perhaps someone needed a connection to a school, while another guest worked in education. Maybe a professional was looking for a community partner, and someone across the room knew exactly who they should meet.
We wanted to make it easier for those connections to happen.
The wall reflected something we believe strongly in our work: helping people shouldn't be a competition.
When professionals share their knowledge, collaborate, and connect others with appropriate resources, everyone benefits, especially the individuals and families we're trying to support.
A Little Mindfulness, Courtesy of Chocolate
Of course, we couldn't invite everyone over without planning something a little unexpected.
One of the highlights of the evening was a guided mindful chocolate tasting, led by our own Joey Florence, Clinical Manager at Counselling & Behaviour.
Rather than simply handing out chocolate, we invited guests to slow down and experience it.
To notice its appearance, aroma, texture, and flavour. To pay attention to how the chocolate changed as it melted, and to appreciate something we might ordinarily eat without giving it much thought.
Our appreciation for the chocolate actually began well before the event, when our team visited SOMA Chocolatemaker to learn about the craft of small-batch chocolate making.
Understanding the care, expertise, time, and distance involved in transforming cacao into a beautifully finished chocolate bar gave us an entirely new appreciation for something so familiar.
That experience became part of what we wanted to share with our guests.
Mindfulness doesn't always have to involve meditation, silence, or a formal exercise. Sometimes it's simply giving your full attention to something you're already doing.
Chocolate gave us a delicious way to explore that idea together.
And perhaps more importantly, it gave everyone a shared experience to talk about.
The Kind of Community We Want to Help Build
When we opened Counselling & Behaviour, we envisioned more than a place where people come for appointments.
We wanted to create a space that contributes to the broader community, where professionals can exchange ideas, families can find meaningful support, and relationships can develop across disciplines.
C&B After Hours was an opportunity to put that vision into practice.
Throughout the evening, we watched people who had never met find common ground, colleagues reconnect, and conversations develop between professionals whose work might otherwise never intersect.
There was no formal agenda to follow or presentation to sit through. Just an opportunity to meet interesting people, enjoy a shared experience, and see what might come of it.
For us, that's an important part of building a stronger community.
It's not about being the centre of every conversation or having all the solutions ourselves. It's about creating opportunities for others to connect, share what they know, and carry their own work forward.
Because sometimes the most useful thing you can do for someone is introduce them to the right person.
Here's to More Evenings Like This
We're incredibly grateful to everyone who joined us for our first C&B After Hours and helped make the evening such a success.
It was wonderful to see our clinic filled with people from different backgrounds and specialties, enjoying themselves, sharing ideas, and getting to know one another beyond their job titles and email signatures.
We hope this will be the first of many opportunities to bring our community together.
And if a conversation started that evening leads to a new collaboration, a helpful referral, a fresh idea, or simply a new friendship, then we've accomplished exactly what we set out to do.
Good things happen when we make room for people to connect.
